wow this is bullshit. stefan had his free will taken away and he didnt want to do that to elena. He isn’t afraid of Elena hating him, he’s afraid of her hating herself which is what she would have done if Matt died.

Damon is selfish, self-centered and he only cares about Elena (besides his brother). He doesn’t care about who dies, he only wants Elena to live. THAT’S OKAY WITH YOU? Thousand people can die but Elena HAS to live? HOW ABOUT MOTHERFUCKING NO? Damon is W-R-O-N-G. And Stefan AND Elena know that. Elena is a transparent character - she’s kind and good and compassionate; and in a sense, she’s fragile. She’s lost so many people already - mostly because of her being a fucking double with some magical blood - losing ONE DAMN MORE would result in her being killed emotionally. She would be a wreck and NO FUCKING ONE would be able to fix that. Stefan knows that. Mystic Falls knows that. MOTHERFUCKING CHUCK NORRIS knows that. Apparently, the only people who don’t know that are dumbasses of this fandom. ELENA IS NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT BEING IN THE UNIVERSE. She knows it, that’s why she would always ALWAYS choose someone else before her; she feels guilty because everything that’s happening is because of her - she started dating Stefan, she’s got blood that can make hybrids, Bonnie’s a witch, Caroline’s a vampire, Tyler’s a hybrid, Alaric is dead, Jenna is dead, she blames herself for her parents death, IMAGINE WHAT IT WOULD HAVE MEAN FOR MATT TO DIE? Stefan knew that. Stefan knew that stripping her off her choice IS NOT THE WISEST IDEA IN THE UNIVERSE. This isn’t about ships, it’s about understanding Elena Gilbert because the only ones who don’t understand her are Damon Salvatore and people who make gifsets like these. Rant over.

Stefan’s not the one who’s scared of Elena hating him, that was in fact his motive for the entire season, so she’d let him go. “I don’t care what you think about me anymore, Elena.” He saved Matt to spare Elena hating herself and feeling guilty. And because that’s what she fucking wanted, he was RESPECTING her choice. Something Damon is never capable of.
And If I remember correctly, I quote Damon “I can’t stand the thought of you hating me forever” lol Any point you try to prove just highlights even more how selfish Damon is. Good one.
